A Sunday Prayer
on a snowy day
Today is Sunday, my favorite day. Last weekend we were home, as shiny sheets of ice formed on our deck and sidewalks. In front of our house the street is shaded by the tall pines we view from our porch. There is little traffic on our street, more walkers than drivers and it was not until Thursday that the ice finally melted. Yesterday, five inches of snow dropped from the sky, straight, silent and beautiful.
Last night as I went to bed, I noticed how bright the light was coming through the curtains. I had forgotten how a world of white snow reflects, making the night shimmery and magical. I sat in my dark living room for a while, staring out at my luminescent back yard. So peaceful.
It is unusual for me to be in my upstairs office on Sunday morning. I cherish these moments and today I am filled with gratitude for both sides of Sunday, the time to listen and the time to celebrate the goodness of God. My heart is full and so I offer this Sunday morning prayer.
Abba, our kind Father,
Thank you for Sundays. Today, thank you for
this out-of-the-ordinary morning,
snowy and shining, the soft powdery snow reflecting
your seasonal creativity.
Thank you, too, for Sundays when
we rise early,
preparing to serve you;
for the preciousness of service, of your Spirit making us
more than we could ever be without you.
Thank you for music that
celebrates You, pulling us into a gratitude that alters
our Monday through Saturday lives.
Thank you for Your spoken Word, reminding us
that all of life is
about You.
Thank you for every precious soul that
embodies their love for you as
they raise their hands in worship and
bow their heads in humility.
Oh Lord, You are great and
greatly to be praised.
Thank You for this day,
Your day, not
ours, and yet
the day that You remind us of
our purpose and our place in
Your world.
And as we sing to you, you sing1
Your love song over
us, bathing us in your
precious light.
Thank you is not enough.
But still,
Thank you.
